Contemporary Dance Theater presents Robert Moses' Kin

March 23 & 24, 2012

San Francisco's Robert Moses' Kin has "rocketed in national reputation,...gaining notice for Moses' fast and furious, streetwise, yet, eloquent style and his bold way of exposing the hypocrises of race and gender in America" (San Francisco Chronicle).

120323_Moses_HeadshotIn Fable and Faith, choreographer Robert Moses became inspired to investigate the ways cultural myths and fairy tales inspire imagination and underpin our core values. He says, “[Parenthood] has focused my thinking in areas that I hadn’t been focusing on before. Reading these fables or fairy tales you discover the bottom line about the character of a particular creature or a human being...The stories become like a scale by which we weigh moral decisions that [help us] stay balanced against trials and tribulations.”

In Fable and Faith, there is text that is both spoken and projected on the proscenium, floor, and the dancers’ bodies as part of the lighting design. Collaborating playwright, Anne Galjour began her career as a children’s storyteller and shares Moses’ passion for the power of fable: “Cultural tales and legends represent the ideal, and maybe the divine, because their images and symbols speak to the soul.”

Also in the program, two other works: the award-winning Soft Sweet (which won the Bay Area Isadora Duncan Award for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography in 2004) and Speaking Ill of the Dead, Moses' 2007 meditation on war. Don’t miss Contemporary Dance Theater's presentation of Robert Moses' Kin, whose last season the San Francisco Chronicle hailed as "masterful" and "an enchanted spell."
