SCRATCH & BURN

ScratchStage

Call it hip-hop dance theater. Call it contemporary performance. Call it five guys getting their antiwar freak on. Call it whatever you like so long as you go see "Scratch & Burn." -- Miami Herald

Teo Castellanos/D-Projects, "Scratch & Burn"

January 19 & 20, 8:30 p.m.

Jarson-Kaplan Theater, Aronoff Center for the Arts

Battles and wars rage in boardrooms, on street corners, in deserts, in jungles and now on stage in SCRATCH & BURN.

Written and directed by Teo Castellanos, with original music by Brimstone 127 and choreography by break dance legend Ricardo "Speedy Legs" Fernandez, Scratch & Burn uses the language of hip-hop and urban street combat to create a powerful statement about the battle for supremacy and domination----begging the question When is war not the answer?

The immensely entertaining dance theater work blends elements of ancient Zulu and Maori rituals with live African drumming, a megaton soundtrack and dramatic effects with lighting, props, costumes and video projection. Five male dancers assume various roles and rarely leave the stage, concluding the show with a display of break dancing that leaves the audience gasping. Scratch & Burn is fast and furious, forceful and athletic, delivering a searing critique of war, violence, racial stereotypes, the Bush administration and U.S. imperialism.

TEO CASTELLANOS/D-PROJECTS

Influenced by the collages of Romare Bearden, Juan Sanchez and the compositions of John Coltrane, D-Projects fuses ancient traditions with contemporary performance and B-Boy choreography confronting social issues and bringing world rituals to the stage.
