Modern Dance Classes at Contemporary Dance Theater

Discover (or rediscover) the joy of modern dance. Contemporary Dance Theater has been training modern dancers for 35 years.  Classes for all abilities.

Modern Dance I
Taught by Kodee Van Nort
Mondays, 7:30 to 9 pm

Kodee Van Nort teaches Level 1 as an introduction to basic Modern dance principles and techniques. Classes begin with a floor warm-up that focuses on alignment, pelvic awareness, and torso stability. Class will progress to standing positions to explore joint & spine mobilization, balance, and articulation. Locomotor movements (walk, run, hop, jump) are then explored and will lead the class into a combination. Throughout class, we will discuss qualities of movement, spatial relationships, and musical dynamics. Kodee’s focus is to continually investigate movement principles to achieve movement flow without risk of injury.

Modern Dance II
Taught by Rachel James

Wednesdays, 6:15-7:45 pm

Modern Dance II -- Modern Dance is as different in style as the teachers themselves. Rachel’s classes are energetic and eclectic, emphasizing physical strength, momentum, musicality, and the fun of it all. Her classes usually begin with stretching and strengthening exercises, transitioning into basic technique (footwork, swings), and then escalate into longer, full-bodied phrases that incorporate technique, strength, agility, and theatrical flair. The music ranges from techno, to rock, to jazz, to world musics.

Modern Dance III
Taught by Dolores Lagdameo
Saturdays, noon to 1:30 pm

This class taught by Dolores Lagdameo begins with a simple full body warm up using breath and concentrating on releasing tension and gaining mobility. The following series of exercises focus on strong placement and classical technique that support a contemporary style balancing lyricism, fluidity, and athleticism. The class culminates in longer across the floor phrases and combinations that utilize the strength, body awareness, and the stylistic sensibility built up throughout the class. The vocabulary taught also carries influences ranging from West African dance, dance theater, a touch of kung fu and a fair share of jazz and ballet.

Prices are $12 per single class; $85 for 10-week term.
